This initiative is coming from the AdoptaCamp organization that have started working with laborers four and a half years ago. Mrs. Saher Shaikh, Founder of AdoptaCamp and Care Packages for Laborers explained, "The purpose of AdoptaCamp is to meaningfully improve the lives of the men who have built our beautiful city. I visit camps nearly every day. AdoptaCamp currently has 9210+ men and 36 camps under its umbrella. In recent years, I'm seeing an increasing number of what I call "abandoned camps". These are camps where the employer has absconded leaving the men with months, sometimes two years worth of unpaid salaries".
The organization has a multi-faceted approach: Physical which includes Hygiene workshops, pro bono dental/medical/optical treatment, making the camps bedbug, lice and cockroach free; Emotional which includes counseling, writing letters home, settling interpersonal disputes; Mental which includes English classes at AUD, sight-seeing trips expanding their horizons. It involves hundreds of volunteers and combined to the program "the Care packages days", it makes a huge difference.
The game of carrom is played in India since 18th century. Once treated to be a pastime game, about 20 million people in India now play it at competitive level in an organized manner. It is a scientific game and is based on physics and geometry. It requires thorough knowledge of angles, deftness of touch, keen sight and superlative control of nerves besides mental and physical fitness. It also requires skill and deep concentration.
