Leading Plastic Surgeon Conducts Special Session in Dubai on Reconstructive Surgery

Date Posted: 22-12-2009

From 'Mommy Makeovers' (to offset the ravages of motherhood)
to Feminine Reconstructive Surgery to little nips and tucks,
Dr Catherine Bergeret can do it all

Dr Catherine Bergeret – Galley (M.D.) is perhaps one of the most sought-after international board-certified plastic surgeons with an A-list clientele across the Middle East and Europe. A visiting consultant at Belhoul European Hospital in Dubai, she specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery and has over two and half decades of experience in addition to the most prestigious degrees from USA and France. Recently, she addressed a select gathering at Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha highlighting the amazing new developments in her highly challenging field and outlining the many reasons why plastic surgery continues to be popular.

Dr Catherine emphasized: "Looks matter. A little lifting, shaping, plumping, smoothing or suctioning would definitely give you an edge and boost your confidence no matter who you are or what you do. Cosmetic medicine used to be the province of the rich and celebrated who would pay cash up front for their tummy tucks and eyelid lifts. But over the last few years with the advent of reality shows like 'Extreme Makeovers' it has become more mainstream with a whole lot of common people embracing vanity medicine. And it is for the best."

An area that Dr Catherine specializes among others is post-pregnancy treatment. Aimed at mothers, it usually involves a trifecta: a breast lift with or without breast implants, a tummy tuck and some liposuction. The procedures are intended to hoist slackened skin as well as reduce stretch marks and pregnancy fat.

Dr Catherine explained: "Pregnancy affects each woman differently, with age and genetics playing a role in how the body recovers. The severe physical trauma of pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding can have profound negative effects that cause women to lose their hourglass figures. Some women have bad stretch marks from pregnancy or lot of weight gain. Twenty years ago, a woman did not think she could do something about it. But now women don’t have to go on feeling self-conscious or resentful about their appearance. For women who want post-pregnancy treatment, we can give them back a nice, firm body… It helps them in all directions of life. It helps them socially, it helps them to dress, it helps in their private life. It gives them confidence."

In fact, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery is all about giving confidence to anyone who wants to look and feel better; from the obese man who wants to slim down, or the haggard accountant with crow’s feet around the eyes. Effects of damage from injuries, birth defects, burns and a number of diseases can be psychologically devastating for people. Even as promising new operations are gaining traction at academic medical centers, plastic surgeons often fail to tell patients about them.

Dr Catherine Said, "One reason is that not all surgeons have trained to perform the latest procedures. It is clear that many reconstruction patients are not being given the full picture of their options. Recent improvements in managing the care of transplant surgical patients, including the use of better anti-rejection drugs, have allowed us to forge into new areas of tissue transplants. Also, there are potentially revolutionary new treatments on the horizon including stem cell. An example is the latest procedure for breast implants entails liposuctioning fat from, say, thighs or buttocks and injecting it into breasts to augment them."

Mr Reda Moukthar, General Manager, Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha, said, "Dr Catherine is an internationally acclaimed plastic surgeon and we are extremely grateful to her for having shared her insights and experiences with the local community, particularly women in the UAE. We are delighted to host events such as these and would be definitely conducting more such sessions in the general interest of public as it helps them to be aware of the latest developments and progress in the medical field internationally."

Dr Catherine will be back in Dubai on January 20, 2010.
